A yurt nestled into a hillside in the mountains of Colorado

Building a Yurt: Tips and Tricks

Building a yurt, a traditional portable dwelling used by nomads in Central Asia, is a great off grid option.  Not only is it a fun and challenging project, but it also offers a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional housing options. In this article, we will go over the step-by-step process of how to build a yurt.

Materials Required:

  • Wooden lattice wall structure
  • Felt for insulation
  • Canvas or similar material for the outer cover
  • Rope or cord for tying everything together
  • Wooden poles for the framework and roof structure
  • Door frame
  • Finial for the center of the roof

Step 1: Choose a location Select a flat and level area with good drainage. It’s important to have a solid foundation and ensure your yurt will not be exposed to heavy winds. You will need to clear the ground of any vegetation, debris, and rocks.

Step 2: Build the platform Lay a level foundation for the yurt. This can be done with a simple wooden platform or a raised deck. If using a platform, make sure it’s level and properly supported to withstand the weight of the yurt.

Step 3: Build the wall lattice The wall lattice is made up of wooden poles that are cut to the appropriate size and then attached together in a circular pattern. You can purchase pre-cut lattice from a yurt kit or create your own. Use rope to tie the lattice together at the top and bottom, and add additional supports for stability.

Step 4: Add insulation Felt is used as insulation for the walls and roof of the yurt. Place the felt over the wall lattice, and use rope to tie it securely in place.

Step 5: Cover the yurt Canvas or similar material is used to cover the yurt. The material should be cut to size and then tied securely to the wall lattice. Be sure to leave an opening for the door.

Step 6: Build the roof structure The roof of the yurt is constructed using wooden poles that are attached to the wall lattice at the top. The poles should be cut to size and then arranged in a circular pattern. A finial is placed in the center to hold the poles together.

Step 7: Cover the roof Similar to the walls, felt is used as insulation for the roof. Once the felt is in place, cover the roof with canvas or similar material. Be sure to tie the cover securely to the roof poles.

Step 8: Add a door frame A door frame is added to the opening left in the wall cover. This can be made from wood or metal and should be securely attached to the wall lattice.

Step 9: Finishing touches Once the yurt is fully constructed, add any final touches such as a chimney for a stove or ventilation system.

Building a yurt is a unique and rewarding experience that offers a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional housing. By following these steps, you can build your own yurt and enjoy the benefits of living in a portable and self-sufficient dwelling.
